MEETING IN THE KITCHEN

Let's switch metaphors.

There is a fundamental difference between people bringing cooked foods to a potluck versus everyone bringing ingredients and preparing the meal as a group. Through our work transforming the left-hand column, we've learned how to make tasty dishes that appeal to a wide range of people. I tend to like my enchiladas spicy, but I've learned that you don't, so I ease up on the cayenne pepper when preparing my offering for the potluck. Similarly, you like to make salad, but you've learned to keep the dressing on the side, so each of us can decide exactly how much he or she wants. These insights and habits are healthy and productive and will no doubt result in more enjoyable potluck dinners, not to mention business meetings.

But we have higher aspirations. As business colleagues and family members, we don't just want to learn how to share pre-made dishes in the dining room; we want to pile into the kitchen and whip up one fantastic feast together. This presents its own set of challenges. How do we tell each other where the ingredients are? How do we decide whether to use vour pasta recipe or mine? Is it possible for us to create new recipes together? For that work, we need a different set of skills.

We will focus on cultivating two skills that I call productive expression and inquiry. These skills are the skeleton key to authentic communication. "Expression" concerns how we present our opinions, feelings, and needs respectfully, while "inquiry" concerns how we help the other to express her opinions, feelings, and needs.
